South x Southeast began 5 years ago with the launch of South x Southeast Photomagazine, an online, bi-monthly publication focusing on photography of the American South. Throughout those years we have become acquainted with photographers who live here as well as those who come here seeking out the South and her stories. When we began, we knew there was work that deserved to be seen, and we wanted to show it. And you continue to fill our pages over and over again with your extraordinary images.
As an added bonus, during these five years, you re-introduced us to the American South. Through you we’ve learned things about places we thought we knew, as well as learning about places we didn’t even know existed. And coming from a fourth generation Southerner that’s saying something. So, from there SxSE Photoworkshops began. We want to share the real South with photographers who are from and/or live here, and those who come here just to shoot the South.
South x Southeast Photoworkshops are led by qualified instructors who are masters at their craft. Workshops are held in major cities as well as small, out-of-the-way towns, the coast, the mountains, and in between, always bringing out the local Southern detail other workshop companies often miss.
A Headquarters House is rented, stocked, and the common rooms opened to all the photographers during the workshop. Big communal meals (Do you cook? Can you help?!), big open spaces in which to project your images, dining room tables on which to spread out prints and books, porches to put your feet up and have great conversations about photography over a cold drink. Shooting in the field can be a group project on foot, car, even a boat. Or maybe you want to just discover on your own. Classrooms can include lectures, private critiques of your work, group projection sessions where we all chime in, portfolio reviews, and much more.
And, if it’s okay with you, we’d like to show your work in a forthcoming issue of South x Southeast Photomagazine.
There’s so much we want to show you! So, come. Shoot the South!

About Nancy

My career in magazines has been long and varied, from arts and culture mags in Savannah, to dogs, tattoos, and biographies in New York. And I am lucky to thoroughly enjoy what I do. In 1997, twenty-five years after leaving for college, I moved back to my 4th generation farm in the heart of Georgia and became reacquainted with my love of photography. For 8 years I shared the co-director position for a fledgling photography festival celebrating the rural South, and through that work learned of the superabundance of excellent photographers in and traveling to the American South. So, in 2011 I launched South x Southeast Photomagazine. In 2015 South x Southeast Photoworkshops and Shop joined the brand.

My door is always open to your questions, suggestions, submissions, ideas, and thoughts. I appreciate you being here!
