Andy Anderson takes us shooting in the Carolina Lowcountry. The original Lowcountry, made up of those counties below the Fall Line – Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper. Home to the coastal towns of Beaufort and Bluffton, and the islands of St. Helena, Hunting, and Hilton Head. Some days we’ll head to the beaches and salt marshes, others inland to the moss-draped country roads and slow life of the locals. We’ll even put you in a boat for a different perspective oF the Lowcountry.

Andy Anderson began his photography career as the first staff photographer for Men’s Journal and currently shoots for some of the biggest and best advertising agencies in the world on brands such as Adidas, Asics, The US Army and Marines, Diner’s Club International, Dodge RAM, Emirates Air, Barbados Tourism, Fiji Tourism, GoRV, Beretta, Nebraska Tourism, Double Tree by Hilton, YETI coolers, Harley Davidson, Hummer, Kodak, Liberty Mutual, Hyatt, Nike, Verizon, Visa, Western Union and numerous state tourism campaigns. His editorial clients include Outside, Stern, Audubon, Condé Nast Traveler and Town & Country to name a few.

He was given the opportunity to be one of twelve select photographers invited to document the XIX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He was also honored to participate in the “God Made a Farmer” RAM Trucks Super Bowl XLVII ad project, which featured many of Andy’s images.

Andy grew up in St. Cloud, Florida and currently lives in Mountain Home, Idaho with his wife and kids. When not traveling on assignment, he can often be found in his Airstream trailer with his bird dog on hunting or fly fishing trips. Andy believes advertising in its highest form is art and brings an enthusiasm for adventure and life to both his personal and commercial work. He is hired for his ability to infuse this into his lifestyle, location landscape, portrait and automotive imagery.

His work has been recognized by numerous award shows, The New York Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, and Graphis and was nominated for Life Magazine “Eisie Award” for excellence in photojournalism. He was a finalist for the MPA Kelly awards for Creative Excellence In Magazine Advertising and winner of the Gold Addy Award for self-promotion in print advertising. The Forbes Gallery has work of his in their permanent collection and his work was featured in an exhibition at The Art Institute of Boston.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The LowCountry Workshop will include shooting in the field and classroom time. We will venture out in groups to the islands and inland, visiting historic sites, nature preserves and small towns. There will be opportunities to go scouting on your own, also. There will be projections and critiques of your work during and/or at the Farewell Supper. If you’d like a portfolio review with Andy or Nancy (included) we’ll schedule that, too. Fees include Supper at the Headquarters House Wednesday, and Saturday.  Nosh food and drink will be at the house for your convenience at all times, also. Further descriptions and instructions will follow upon reservation.

BASIC SCHEDULE

Wednesday:

Arrive in the afternoon at the Headquarters House in time to meet the other photographers, and Andy. Our Welcome Supper is held there that evening, and Andy will give a presentation of his work and career. We ask that everyone attend this function as it sets the tone for the next 3 days, allows us to start on Thursday already acquainted with each other and with a good idea of what everyone wants to see and do.

Thursday:

Morning shooting in the field getting to know the Lowcountry, maybe a visit to one of the islands. Thursday afternoon is open to classroom or exploring on your own. Early Supper at the House before evening shooting and an early the next morning.

Friday:

Get in the boat! An early morning excursion as the marshes come to life. Back in time for lunch at the house, Shooting/Napping/ On Your Own Time or some time with Andy in the afternoon. A late afternoon trip into town (Beaufort or Bluffton – both full of history and funky people)  and dinner is on your own. Back to house later for viewing work, talking photography, and putting your feet up on the porch with a cold drink.

Saturday:

Field work in the morning. Maybe a deeper excursion into the piney woods inland. Maybe some classroom time with Andy, or a port review. Farewell Supper at the House early, though, with projections of everyone’s work, critique, dessert and cocktails to round out a wonderful four days,

MATERIALS

Flash drive for downloading the images you would like to project for review and critique with the instructor, or the group.
